- High-performance version of the BMW 5-Series
- 560-hp, twin-turbo V-8 engine
- Lots of standard features, including navigation
The 2015 BMW M5 looks like a family car, but goes like a racecar.
The M5 gets a few visual cues that separate it from the rest of the 5-Series sedan family. Up front the fascia has been modified with larger low air intakes and more aggressive aerodynamics. The brake calipers have been painted blue and bear the M logo, while out back quad exhaust tips and a rear spoiler also provide more clues. 19-inch wheels are standard, along with xenon HID headlamps and a power moonroof. Exterior options include full LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, and a soft-close doors.
Under the hood is a bananas 560-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that makes 500 pounds-feet of torque. If that’s not enough horsepower for you, the available Competition Package bumps output up to 575-hp. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The automatic is the slightly faster of the two, running from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds vs. 4.3 seconds with the manual. But the two-tenths margin isn’t enough to dissuade folks who prefer to row their own gears. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but the M5 is capable of doing much more.
The suspension offers adjustable dampers and three different driving modes to suit conditions. An active M rear differential comes standard as well, which helps to keep the M5’s power on the road. For added stopping power, a set of carbon-ceramic brakes is available.
Inside, the M5 packs in the standard features. A 10.2-inch touchscreen, iDrive, navigation, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, and dual-zone automatic climate control are found on every M5. The seats bear M logos and more aggressive bolstering to help keep you in place during spirited driving; they are also wrapped in Merino leather for added luxury. Options include ventilated front seats, a rear entertainment system, and a Bang & Olufsen premium stereo.
Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, dynamic radar cruise control, and BMW Remote Services which offers stolen vehicle recover and remote door unlocking via a smartphone app. Also available are night vision with pedestrian detection and a Driver Assistance Plus Package which adds lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings, and three added cameras which show a top-down view of the M5.
