2010 BMW M3

How the 2010 BMW M3 stacks up against the competition - by Nigel Cooper, Topanga, CA

BMW M3 Review
2010 BMW M3
Price Range: $54,850 - $66,500

Performance
As far as horsepower, the BMW M3 packs quite a punch and will knock the typical coupe/hatchback down a few rungs. On the flip side, remember that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their similar turning radii, the typical coupe/hatchback and the M3 definitely handle roughly the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The BMW M3 has a larger engine than the typical coupe/hatchback. Note that smaller engines are often cheaper to fix, but a smaller engine usually has to work a little harder. The BMW M3 packs quite a wallop compared to the typical coupe/hatchback with respect to torque, which is the force that lets you accelerate quickly.

Utility
The M3 and the average coupe/hatchback can accommodate the same number of passengers. There's no clear winner between the BMW M3 and the average coupe/hatchback regarding hauling capacity.

Convenience
You'll definitely have to take the M3 for a fill-up more often than the typical coupe/hatchback because of its tank size and fuel economy.

Comfort
While the front cabin in the typical coupe/hatchback offers a bit more head room than the BMW M3, there frankly isn't much of a difference. While the rear of the BMW M3 offers a bit more head- and leg-room than the average coupe/hatchback, there really isn't much of a difference.

Dimensions
The average coupe/hatchback's tank is roughly the same size as the M3's, though the M3's is a little larger. The average coupe/hatchback and the BMW M3 compete for the same parking spaces.

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs about the same to get the typical coupe/hatchback to the dealership as the M3. The BMW M3 will tax your gas budget substantially more than the average coupe/hatchback will. With respect to fuel economy, the typical coupe/hatchback beats the M3. The average coupe/hatchback is tremendously less pricey than the BMW M3 when it comes to MSRP. The BMW M3 will cost you a bundle in gasoline every year compared to the typical coupe/hatchback. The typical coupe/hatchback will save you a bundle at the pump every year compared to the BMW M3.

Warranty
The basic warranty that comes with the typical coupe/hatchback isn't quite as generous as the M3's.
