2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Overview
BMW rolled out the ActiveHybrid5 for 2012, complementing its robust lineup of midsize luxury cars with a hybrid model that enhances efficiency but doesn’t sacrifice the driving performance expected of a BMW. The ActiveHybrid5 sedan seats five, and retains the same style of the gasoline-powered 5 series BMWs.
A 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter, twin-turbo inline six-cylinder couples with a 55-horsepower electric motor and lithium-ion battery to provide a total output of 335-horsepower. This system rockets the ActiveHybrid5 from 0-to-60 mph in an estimated 5.7 seconds, on par with gas-only 5-Series models. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power through rear-wheels and employs auto start-stop to shut the engine off when stopped in traffic and when the vehicle is coasting, which improves fuel economy. Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are available to take full advantage of the transmission’s manual shift mode. Brake energy regeneration recaptures kinetic energy normally lost during braking and uses it to help recharge the batteries. The electric motor is capable of powering the ActiveHybrid5 at speeds up to 37 mph on its own.
Fuel economy ratings for the ActiveHybrid5 are not available, but the hybrid system of the ActiveHybrid5 is expected to improve performance over the gasoline-powered 5 series BMWs, which are rated at 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway using the same eight-speed transmission.
The ActiveHybrid5 shares the styling of the 5 series BMW lineup, with similar standard and optional features. Ten-way power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats with four-way lumbar support, and memory for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors is included, and can be upgraded to 18-way power seats with adjustable thigh support, passenger seat memory and active head restraints. Dakota leather upholstery is included, and Nappa leather upholstery is available. Three-stage heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are also an option. The interior is appointed with dark wood trim, which can be changed out to additional wood trim options or aluminum trim. The audio system includes ten-speakers, HD radio, and iPod/USB connectivity, and can be controlled by audio controls mounted on the three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. A premium multichannel surround sound system, Sirius Satellite Radio, and rear-seat entertainment system are available. Bluetooth® wireless calling and the BMW iDrive system provide added convenience and integration with smart phones and music devices. The ActiveHybrid5 is equipped with a standard voice-command navigation system with Real Time Traffic information.
The aerodynamic styling of the ActiveHybrid5 mimics the design of the 5 series family. Subtle design features distinguish the hybrid from the rest of the series such as the ActiveHybrid badge, exclusive Bluewater Metallic paint option, and distinctive 18-inch radial spoke light alloy wheels. Xenon adaptive headlights and fog lights are standard. The two-way power moonroof includes one-touch operation and a sliding sunshade.
The ActiveHybrid5 comes equipped with front, side-impact and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. Standout safety options include parking sensors, a rear view camera, active blind spot detection, heads-up display, and night vision pedestrian detection. The BMW Assist safety plan is included with four years of automatic collision notification and emergency assistance.
The 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid5 is an eco-friendly alternative to the gasoline-powered 5 series, and without sacrifice in driving performance one normally expects from a hybrid.
