2012 BMW 740 Overview
Comfort and luxury are the name of the game for the 2012 BMW 740 sedan that is available in regular and extended-length models.
The 2012 BMW 740 is the baby of the 7 Series, which includes the 750, 750 hybrid, 760, and the performance-oriented Alpina B7 (all covered separately on this site). New additions for 2012 include a sport steering wheel, backup camera, and an iPod/USB adapter as standard equipment.
Like we mentioned earlier, the 740 is available in regular (740i) and long-wheelbase models (740Li). The 740Li is 5.5 inches longer than the regular model for those who want more rear legroom and a larger trunk. Under the hood, the 2012 BMW 740 features a 315-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine that is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with auto-manual mode. The 740 is rear-wheel-drive only (other models in the 7-Series have all-wheel drive). Fuel estimates are 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway and the 740 competes with other flagship sedans like the Audi A8, Jaguar XJ, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Seating five, the 2012 740 rests on 18-inch wheels, while 19- and 20-inch wheels are optional. Standard exterior features include: power adjustable, folding, heated, auto-dimming, body-color side-view mirrors (that’s a mouthful) and xenon adaptive headlights with dynamic auto-leveling. A sunroof and high-beam assist, which automatically dims the high beams when it detects oncoming drivers, are optional.
One of the reasons, if not the main reason, you are interested in a BMW is because of its refinement and luxury. The 740’s interior delivers with standard heated front seats, Dakota leather upholstery, high-gloss wood trim, rear vanity mirrors, auxiliary input jack, and a memory system for the front seats and steering wheel. For full, comprehensive access of the 740’s controls, the iDrive system allows you to operate the 10-speaker stereo, 12 GB hard drive-based navigation system and dual-zone climate control with ease on a 10.25-inch high-res display. A 16-speaker, 600-watt sound system, power tailgate, six-disc DVD changer, rear-seat entertainment system with two eight-inch screens, and massaging/ventilated rear seats are optional.
If you thought those features were impressive, wait until you read about the high-tech safety features. The 2012 BMW 740 boasts blind spot detection, side and top view cameras, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, heads-up display, and night vision with pedestrian detection as optional equipment. Side curtain airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, knee airbags and an electronic stability system are standard.
With all of the luxurious appointments and high-tech features, it will be a wonder if you ever step foot outside of the 2012 BMW 740.
