Luxury automakers have been fascinated with coupelike four-door cars, and BMW's entrant is the 6 Series Gran Coupe. Based on a stretched version of the 6 Series coupe, the Gran Coupe has seating for up to five people but is optimized to carry four. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and Audi A7.
New for 2014
The 640i Gran Coupe is now available with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system in addition to being offered with rear-wheel drive. All models get an updated version of BMW's iDrive controller system that brings revised graphics, new menu interfaces, upgraded navigation and a dictation service for composing short messages.
The BMW 640i Gran Coupe features a low, sleek roofline and traditional trunk lid. Standard equipped with 18- inch light-alloy wheels, 19- or 20-inch wheels are also available. Roads are illuminated with adaptive xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, with adaptive LED headlights available. LED taillights come standard. The BMW Individual comes in a variety of matte paint finishes. Available M Sport Package features unique front and rear styling, side skirts, black chrome exhaust tips, black brake calipers, LED fog lights, a sport exhaust system for the V-8 model and 19-inch wheels.
The Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches longer than the 6 Series coupe, in part for better backseat comfort. Additionally, the center console extends to the backseat. Three grades of leather upholstery in a variety of colors are available for the interior. The 640i Gran Coupe comes fully equipped with standard tech features such as driver-focused dashboard topped with 10.2-inch screen for iDrive system, navigation system, and CD stereo system with HD Radio capability and MP3 jack. Upgraded sound options include Bang & Olufsen stereo with satellite radio and iPod connectivity. For comfort, options include ventilated seats, sunshades for rear window and rear side glass, and four-zone climate control. Ceramic accents for the gear selector and iDrive controller available. Available M Sport Package adds Alcantara simulated suede and leather sport seats with blue stitching, an M steering wheel, aluminum trim and additional M logos
Under the Hood
The 640i Gran Coupe features a 315-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, while the 650i Gran Coupe is powered by a 445-hp, turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. Both come equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 6 series Gran Coupe comes with an option as a Rear- or all-wheel drive vehicle, and adaptive dampers with drive-selectable options available. The available eco Pro mode reduces gas pedal responsiveness, makes the transmission upshift sooner and downshift later, and includes a screen to show how driving characteristics affect vehicle range. Option to equip active suspensions to limit body roll and rear-wheel steering can enhance high-speed stability and low-speed maneuverability.
Standard safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability system, active front head restraints, side-impact airbags, front and rear parking sensors, and a backup camera. Optional are lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring system, surround-view camera system, night vision with pedestrian detection, and a full-color head-up display.
