Changes for 2012 include an M Sport Package that includes larger wheels, tires and aero body trims among other enhancements. The new BMW Apps feature integrates with the state-of-the-art ConnectedDrive system including Mobile Office. Altogether, it displays smartphone emails and text messages on the iDrive screen when stationary and reads them to you while driving.

Borrowing cues from the larger 7 Series, the 2012 550 Gran Turismo incorporates a steeply raked hatch that tapers into a short, sedan-like trunk. Because it’s kind of like a wagon, the 550 GT gains six inches on the 5 Series sedan and offers 15.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats, and a total of 60 cubic feet behind the front seats. There is seating for up to five occupants and a dual-access tailgate that features a smaller trunk lid and a larger tailgate allows for customized rear access.

Keeping objects that are not just in front of you, but around the corner illuminated are xenon adaptive headlights with dynamic auto-leveling and Cornering Lights. A 12-speaker, two-subwoofer sound system, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, dark wood trim, Dakota leather upholstery and panoramic moonroof are all standard features. Heated and ventilated front seats, premium 600-watt, 16-speaker sound system, navigation system are optional. The updated iDrive system controls radio, CD, telephone and navigation settings via a central knob and displays the information on giant 10.2-inch high-resolution monitor.

Cutting-edge safety technology like a rear-view camera, Park Distance Control, Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, multi-view camera and a blind spot warning system are optional.
