It’s a year of transition for the 2014 BMW 328, as shuffles up and down BMW’s product lineup have brought several changes to the best-selling 328.
For 2014, BMW has broken out all two-door (coupe/convertible) versions of the 3-series (including the 328) into the new 4-series so the 328 is now offered as a sedan and a sport wagon. Further changes for 2014 include a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, a 10 year subscription to BMW’s emergency notification system, and added wood trim on the interior.
The 3-series is two years out from a redesign that was more of an adaptation than a departure from the previous version. 2014’s version appears identical to previous years. There are minor differences in small cosmetic pieces across trim levels, with an M-sport appearance package optional that adds slightly more aggressive body work. Xenon headlights and 17-inch wheels are standard, with automatic high beams, 18- and 19-inch wheels, and a power moonroof also available.
Under the hood, the 328i features a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission (a six-speed manual is also offered). The new for 2014 328d, which brings diesel efficiency to the 3-series lineup, is powered by a 180-hp, turbo-diesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder which makes 280 pounds-feet of torque. It is mated to the same eight-speed automatic. Both models have standard rear-wheel drive with all-wheel drive available (wagon versions have standard all-wheel drive).
The big story for 2014 is the diesel trim’s fuel economy, which checks in at 32/45 mpg city/highway with rear-wheel drive. The 328i is also no slouch; it won the fuel economy competition against its segment during Cars.com’s sport sedan shootout last year, and maxes out at 23/35 mpg city/highway.
Inside, the BMW 328 offers a highly customizable interior that offers sporty seats and plenty of luxury features. BMW’s iDrive system is standard, as are push button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio, USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen in the center console. Powered front seats, leather upholstery, headed front and rear seats, navigation system, and a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo are optional. The M Sport package we mentioned earlier also adds a few interior touches including a different steering wheel and M badges sprinkled throughout the cabin.
Safety features on the 328 include stability and traction control, antilock brakes with emergency braking assist, and active head restraints. Eight airbags are standard, including front, front-side impact, driver and passenger knee, and side-curtains. The IIHS named the 3-Series sedan a Top Safety Pick.
