BMW debuts its new 1 Series 135i as a pint-sized coupe and convertible. Just how compact is it? The rear-wheel drive, 300 hp, 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder driving machine is about 10 inches shorter than a 3 Series sedan. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission propels the 1 Series to 60 mph from rest in about five seconds flat. That may slow somewhat with three others on board, but they’ll be all smiles once the 135i takes a few fast turns. Performance rivals include the Nissan 350Z and Volkswagen R32.

The 135i sports 18-inch wheels and distinguishes itself from its sister sibling, the 128i, with a good-looking, functional lip spoiler that the Bavarian automaker says increases downforce and brake cooling. Sport suspension, performance brakes and adaptive xenon headlights (for safer night driving) come standard. BMW's Active Steering system, which can adjust how much the car turns for a given turn of the steering wheel, is optional.

Built for the masses with a base price of less than $30,000, the 135i appeals to the technically savvy. The optional iDrive large knob/wheel on the center console operates six Programmable Memory Keys. A new stability sensor continually monitors the car’s movements. The 135i convertible features a unique power-operated softtop that BMW says can open or close in 22 seconds (at speeds up to 25 mph).

Cloth tops are available in black, taupe or Moonlight Black. The latter is interwoven with metallic fibers so it shimmers in the sun. The convertible's leather seats have BMW's Sun Reflective Technology, which is designed to keep heat-exposed seats cool to the touch.

Comparable to the larger 3 and 5 Series models, the 1 Series has a more upright grille; a pronounced sheet metal crease runs the length of the coupe's sides. Cheeky and aggressive, the 2008 BMW 135i is perfect for the young enthusiast to start a lifelong love affair with the ultimate driving brand.
