2013 Audi S8 Overview
The 2013 Audi S8 takes all the luxury and panache of Audi’s flagship A8 and adds neck snapping performance. It is comfort and sport without compromise.
There are really only a few things that come to mind when we look at the S8. First, it’s huge. All of the Audi sedans sort of blend together and the S8 looks like an S4 or an S6 on steroids; the basic shape is the same, but it’s longer, wider, and heavier than the others. Based on the standard wheelbase version of the A8 (no L version here), the S8 is the crown-jewel of Audi’s sedan segment. It offers standard full-LED headlights, 21” alloy wheels, power trunk, and powered soft-close doors. All the normal luxuries: heated side mirrors, automatic windshield wipers, and LED taillights – are standard as well. To make the S8 look even sportier and to distinguish it from the A8, Audi has given it a wider, muscled body and quad chrome exhaust pipes.
The interior of Audi’s S8 is sumptuously adorned in old and new, mixing leather, wood, and the latest in-car technology. There are powered-leather sport seats, a sunroof, a central info display, climate control, a tilt/telescoping multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth/iPod connectivity, and a Bose premium sound system, all as standard. The options list offers plenty of customization with several different types of wood, carbon-fiber, metallic inlays, leather, and cloth are available for a prospective owner’s mix-n-match delight. In addition, satellite navigation, a night vision system, rear-seat entertainment screens, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system are all options.
For 2013, the S8 got significant powertrain changes. It drops two cylinders from the outgoing version moving from a V-10 to a twin-turbo V-8. Even though it’s smaller, the new engine, thanks to forced induction, offers benefits when it comes to both power (increased by 15 percent) and fuel economy (improved by almost 25 percent). At 520-horsepower and 48 pounds-feet of torque, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 makes the S8 the most powerful sedan Audi has ever built. An eight-speed automatic transmission, Quattro all-wheel drive, adaptive sport suspension, and a sporty differential are all standard. This all combines to run the S8 from a standstill to 60 MPH in 3.9 seconds, faster than most new Porsche 911’s. The fuel economy is impressive for a car producing over 500-horsepower: 15/26 mpg city/highway.
With ten airbags, traction/stability control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, and special high-strength steel standard, the 2013 S8 also impresses when it comes to safety features. Also available is the latest in car safety technology, with night-vision cameras, lane-change assist, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, and a special camera system for peeking around tight corners optional.
