- Performance oriented version of the A7
- 420-hp, twin-turbo V-8 engine offers plenty of power
- One of our favorite cars from a styling standpoint
Packing plenty of performance, the 2014 Audi S7 is the sportier version of the A7 four-door hatchback (for lack of a better term) offering more power and an upgraded suspension to go along with the A7’s great style.
There aren’t many changes to speak of for 2014, a new Black Optic package that brings a unique grill and black window trim is the only new feature on the docket.
The A7 defies convention with its shape; it’s not really a sedan since it’s too sleek, or a coupe since it has too many doors, and has a liftgate out back – so we’ve settled on four-door hatchback in the absence of a real name. 19-inch wheels come standard, with 20-inch cogs optional. Out back, you’ll find quad exhaust tips, a powered rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds for added stability, LED taillights, and a power liftgate. The front headlights features LED tube accents that are Audi’s signature with a full LED setup optional.
Power for the S7 comes from Audi’s 420-hp, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 which outputs 406 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Quattro all-wheel drive and a sporty differential that throws more power to the back are standard, as is an adaptive air suspension. The S7 runs from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and still gets decent fuel economy, 17/27 mpg city/highway.
The inside of the S7 is business as usual when it comes to Audi, with elegant styling and upscale materials. The one-piece sport bucket seats are diamond-stitched, coated with leather, and heated; the standard tilt/telescoping multifunction steering wheel is trimmed in leather and controls the audio system. Audi’s MMI system with navigation plus and an eight-inch LCD display is standard, as are a 14-speaker Bose stereo system, automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB/iPod port. The options list includes ventilated seats, Bang & Olufsen sound system, massaging seats, and even a heads-up display for nighttime driving.
The 2014 S7 comes with eight standard airbags (including front knee airbags), but can be upgraded to ten by adding a pair of rear side-impact airbags if desired. In addition, traction/stability control, antilock disc brakes, and all-wheel drive provide extra safety. There are a few extra safety technology goodies available as options, including lane assist, corner-view cameras, and radar-guided cruise control.
