The 2012 Acura MDX midsize luxury SUV provides an excellent compromise for the high-performance driver looking to upgrade to a roomier, higher capacity family car.

The MDX is powered by a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter, V-6 engine that delivers 270 pounds/feet of torque for a towing capacity rated at 5,000 pounds. The six-speed automatic transmission features a sport shift mode with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for smoother gear changes in automatic mode, and a manual shift mode for greater control. The Super Handling all-wheel drive system is high-performance-tuned for automatic weight distribution and traction control response to improve agility and fuel economy.

The 2012 Acura MDX has a fuel economy rating of 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg for highway driving.

The MDX seats a total of seven with second and third row seating, with a foldable center armrest for the second row when the middle seat is not occupied, and cup holders for both second and third row passengers. The front bucket seats include a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and an 8-way power adjustable front passenger seat. Leather upholstery and heated front seats come standard and can be upgraded to include a seat ventilation system with perforated premium leather. An upgrade for heated second row seating is also available. The cargo area provides 15 cubic feet of storage and can be extended by folding down the 50/50 third-row seats for over 42 cubic feet of storage, and a maximum volume of over 83 cubic feet of storage is available by folding down the 60/40 second-row seats. The automatic climate control system has voice control capabilities and includes a control panel for second-row passengers. An optional GPS temperature control feature automatically tracks the vehicle’s position to the sun and adjusts to compensate for heat gain.

The audio system includes AM/FM/XM radio and MP3- and WMA-compatible six-disc CD changer, with auxiliary input jack and speed-dependent volume control. Available upgrades include 10-speaker surround sound, UPB/iPod audio interface, a 15G media storage hard drive, DVD-player with rear entertainment system, and music voice command capability. An available navigation system includes eight-inch display screen, multi-view rear camera, and traffic and weather information. Bluetooth hands-free calling with steering wheel controls is included and can be upgraded to extend voice commands to the navigation, audio and climate control systems, and phone book storage integrated into the navigation system to display caller ID for incoming calls.

The MDX exterior features an angular design with prominent Acura shield grille and chrome door handles and accents. The rear features a roof-mounted air spoiler, flared bumper and dual exhaust. Xenon headlamps come standard and may be upgraded to include auto-leveling capabilities. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels come standard and may be upgraded to 19-inch alloy wheels. The standard power tailgate opens and closes with a push of the key fob or button on driver’s door.

Standard safety features include a six-airbag system with two front, two front-side, and two side curtain airbags that provide coverage for all three rows of passenger seating. A rearview camera is included with a display in the rearview mirror that can be upgraded to include the display within the optional navigation system and include three separate views. The optional blind spot information system provides for safer lane changes, and available adaptive cruise control monitors the car ahead and provides speed adjustments accordingly. Optional collision mitigation braking uses radar to alert the driver to a possible collision and automatically apply braking to initiate driver action.
