New 2010 Toyota Highlander

The second-generation 2010 Toyota Highlander midsize crossover sport-utility vehicle is larger, roomier, quieter and more powerful than its predecessor, yet still offers competitive fuel efficiency.

The 2010 Toyota Highlander is available in Base, Sport and Limited trim levels in both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations. Highlander Hybrid models are equipped with four-wheel-drive with intelligence and available in Base and Limited trims. Two engine choices are offered, including a new-for-2009 187-horsepower, 2.7-liter inline-4 (Base) and a 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 (Sport and Limited) coupled to either a five- or six-speed automatic transmission with auto-manual shift. EPA estimated fuel economy ratings range between 17-20 mpg in the city and 23-27 mpg on the highway.

Facing competition from the likes of Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Dodge Nitro and Honda Pilot, the 2010 Toyota Highlander rests atop standard 17-inch alloy wheels. The Sport—which gets a sport-tuned suspension—and Limited models sit on 19-inch alloys and feature a chrome front grille and rear spoiler. An optional towing package allows a maximum capacity of 5,000 pounds for V-6 models.

Inside, the 2010 Toyota Highlander can seat up to seven occupants across three rows of seats, including a fold-flat third-row seat and 40/20/40 folding second-row bench, which Toyota calls “Center Stow.” This configuration allows for a maximum of 95.4 cubic feet of cargo volume. Get some fresh air using the power tilt/slide sunroof, which is now standard, as well as a backup camera with a 3.5-inch multi-information display (Sport and Limited) so you can see objects behind you. A six-speaker CD audio system is standard on base and Sport models, while the Limited adds an in-dash CD changer and MP3 and satellite radio capability. Leather seating and multi-stage heated seats are available as options.

Toyota's all-encompassing Star Safety System features enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. A suite of seven airbags includes advanced driver and front passenger, front seat-mounted side and a driver's knee airbag. Roll-sensing side curtain airbags protect occupants in all three rows in the event of certain side collisions or a rollover and all models are now standard equipped with front active headrests.
